Symbolism
The murder of Ruta was a very brutal murder. Ruta’s body was found with a cryptic symbol near her body. The symbol was a 5 pointed star or a star with 2 points pointed to the sky and one down with a snake devouring its tail. The snake symbolizes ‘“there is no beginning and no end” (139). The star symbolizes “means matter over god” or “Spirit becoming flesh rather than the other way ‘round” (139). All together these symbols put together made it a pentacle- and- snake emblem. This came from the “Religious Fervor and Fanaticism in the Burned- Over District” (183). This book includes Christian writings and curesfor insomnia. Another symbolism that took place in this book was the Eye with sun rays behind and a lightning bold underneath the eye. This eye was a symbol that came from The Prophecies of Liberty Anne Rathbone. This symbol was one of the Diviners symbols they used. The symbol, symbolizes how the Diviners can see the “heavenly abyss of which only angles and the all- Seeing Eye providence are visitors” (184). This symbol has also another meaning of “The Diviners must stand, or all shall fall” (185). All together many things in this book have meanings and symbolize different things just like the snake, star symbol and the eye of the Diviners.
Irony
Throughout The Diviners there were multiple displays or uses of irony in the book. One of them was when Evie found out Mabel had a “thing” for Jericho. Which ironically Evie knew Jericho because he is her Uncle Will’s assistant for the Museum of Creepy Crawlies.
Setting
Evie O’Neill a young woman of a small town in Ohio is sent to
live with her Uncle Will in the city that never sleeps. New York City was
defiantly not the place for a young woman of her age but she needed to leave her
home town. The year is 1926, the streets are filled with flapper’s dancers,
people with dreams, pickpockets and now a murder is on the loose. The problem
with Evie is she has a supernatural power that she needs to keep secret from
anyone. Her parents had no idea and she doesn’t want her uncle to find out
either. Evie was living with her uncle Will who is the owner of the Museum of
Creepy Crawlies in downtown NYC. When a body is found under a bridge in NYC Uncle Will was called in to
help investigate because of a symbolic symbol found near the murder sight. Evie
soon realizes she can help solve the murder with her supernatural power.
